The Green School Conference “Solutions to Reduce Your Cost”

Al Manar Modern School, represented by the School Coordinator of UNESCO Activities Mrs. Jinan Karameh Shayya, and the Social Sciences Coordinator Mrs. Sara Abilmona, attended The Annual Green School Conference organized by Eco solution and sponsored by FransaBank on Wednesday, May 30th, 2018 at Monroe Hotel in Beirut. In the presence of Dr. Owijan, the president of National Center of Educational Research and Development, Mr. Adnan Kassar, Chairman of FransaBank, and Mr. Gilbert Tegho, CEO of Eco solution, various significant issues were discussed for the more effective promotion of Environmental Education and Education for Sustainable Development in schools.

Student Council Taking Action

Summer S.T.E.A.M Camp

Almanar Modern School had the chance to receive Mr. Ben Koch, the founder of “NuMinds Enrichment”, who presented a demonstration about the transformation of education through enrichment programs based on Passion, Curiosity and Multi-disciplinary approach to STEAM (Science/Technology/Engineering/Arts/Math) subjects. An open discussion followed the presentation about the possible implementation of such a program at our school.

Being dedicated to providing our students with the necessary educational foundation that will prepare them for the future career, our school AMS has decided to implement the S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) educational program that is provided by NuMinds Enrichment and Tatweer Baladna in its 2018 Summer Camp.

This “S.T.E.A.M” one day camp took place from  at the school campus from July 9 till August 11, 2018 for students in grades 1 till 8. The courses that will be given include “Robotics”, “Mars Bot Mission”, “I can Build a Bridge!”

 

MESD “Cleanliness Activity”

Believing in the students’ potentials and enriching their environmental awareness in authentic activities, Al Matn Organization for Environment and Sustainable Development (MESD) has organized an effective cleanliness activity where more than 100 students from Almanar Modern School (Grades 11 & 8 AMS school) in addition to RasElmatn schools were fully involved in cleaning and sorting the trash in four streets in RasElmatn showing the green positive attitude to keep our environment clean and beautiful. So proud of our students and their green work.

Math on the Move

Yes, Math is Fun!

The Math Department organized a Math Kermes entitled “Math on the Move”. Students in cycles 1-2-3 played Math games and competed to practice Math concepts. Students were at the same time informed about three main topics: Cleanliness, Bullying and Smoking as this Kermes was a part of “The Awareness Day”.

KG Reuse Day

The protection of the global climate is an essential task to everyone, and to support climate-friendly activities our kindergartners held a reuse day from recycled Cds. Thank you KG teachers for this awesome “CD Frog Craft”!

KG3 had a blast playing games from recycled bottle caps.  They wrote their names using the lettered caps.

Never Waste the Waste

In the presence of the UNESCO-affiliated school coordinator in Lebanon, Ms. Christian Geitani, principals, teachers and students from various affiliated schools, and Mr. Nasr Makarem and his wife, the implementation of the global project “Preparedness for Climate Change” was presented by Ms. Sarah Abi Al-Menna, Ms. Janan Karama Shea and members Students Council.

The meeting started with a welcome speech from the school administration. The play included plays and songs performed by the kindergarten students and the elementary stage, as well as scientific projects for middle and high school students, and activities for the elementary and secondary stages and the art of recycling and reuse. Al-Manar Modern School was characterized by the effectiveness of the application of education on sustainable development. The coordinator, Jeitani, expressed her pride in her management, teachers and students and the achievements of Al-Manar in the field of education for climate change. We thank our talented student Haneen Abou El Hassan for filming the event.

Implementing the ProtectED Program

Our school implements the ProtectED Program”

Almanar Modern School, represented by the Social Studies and Protect ED Coordinator, Sara Abilmona and the Social Studies and ProtectED teacher, participated in the conference “Empowering Students with Knowledge” held at the Four Seasons Hotel-Beirut to honor our school and other schools implementing the ProtectEd Program.

We are proud to be one of the pioneering schools in the region to successfully implement the ProtectEd Program which provides effective, preventive, and innovative safety education. We were also among 12 schools to participate in a study conducted by Nielsen and commissioned by BLOM Bank. The study was conducted with 1265 Grade 6 students from different social-economic backgrounds and religious backgrounds.

Based on this study, the program proved that students are interested in its topics and learned severely things regarding their safety and stopped talking to strangers online and that the program taught them to stand up to a bully.

 

An Outstanding Achievement in Mobarat Oloum

With their sustainable values, creative minds, and argumentation skills, two groups of our students have participated this year in Mobarat Oloum supervised by Mrs. Jinan Karameh Shayya and Mr. Wajdi Tarabay: Adam AL Ramah, Jessica Shayya, and Aya Gharzeddine from Grade 8 with their project “Liter of Light”, and Dani Halabi, Yamen Bouchahine, and Ralf Makarem from Grade 10 with their project “Bright Plants for Bright Future” who won the Silver Medal. Congratulations and we are so proud of you all.

“Liter of Light”

“Liter of Light” is a project that uses recyclable materials to refract and reflect light inside camps or poor homes where there is no electricity installation.

“Bright Plants for Bright Future” demonstrates a way to generate electricity from plants.

Grades 6 & 7 Climate Change Awareness

By integrating climate change education, sixth and seventh graders in geography studied documents and presented concepts related to the causes and consequences of climate change and the importance of working to protect the planet and life on its surface.

Excellent Achievements in LAU Language Arts Fair

Outstanding English Language Arts and Performing Arts have been highly recognized at LAU today. Our dear students participated in LAU Language Arts Fair and won the following awards:

AMS Annual Plantation

Year after year and Ms. Faten AlHalabi with her students plant different kinds of plants in the school’s backyard, but this year was special with the presence of Mr. Camille Makarem.

Awareness Fair “Because We Care”

With the collaboration of six NGOs, Almanar Modern School had the pleasure to organize awareness fair titled “Because We Care”. The fair raised awareness in car and road safety, saving energy, fires, Alzheimer, drugs, smoking, sun burns, children cancer, reflex, use of antibiotics, and hunting and using guns…

The fair also had a section to honor our beloved angels, Cezar, Adonai, and Maher.

Electrostatics Concept

When physics knowledge is used to save the planet, many creative inventions are addressed and employed. Grade 10 student Dani G. Al-Halabi , researched the device that cleans air by using the concept of Electrostatics and presented his findings to his colleagues.

Grade9 Developing Environmental Awareness

Believing in the importance of developing environmental awareness, grade 9 students have demonstrated presentations on environmental issues such as: air pollution, noise pollution, and land pollution.

Composting and Studying Soil

To move one step towards 3 Rs, Grade 7 students have researched with their science teacher, Mrs. Hilda Albanna the dos and don’ts of composting in order to get rid of the organic wastes sorted in school bins. Composting at school was hindered by the quality of organic wastes sorted. Composting needs alternating layers of soil with greens and browns which are not found in school bins. So, they had to bring the required organic wastes from home.

Composting was not accomplished at AMS, but Grade 7 students are ready to work  better on  garbage sorting before they accomplish composting next year.

Grade 8 Environmental Activity

Grade 8 students have worked on an exciting environmental activity, under the supervision of Mrs. Enaya Salha, as launching theme related to their reading unit “Pollution”. They went on a tour all over the school floors checking and accessing the effectiveness of sorting garbage. By the end of their study, they suggested several points such as adding recycling bins in the cafeteria and promised to follow up later on

Eat Smart for a Healthy Heart

They say “A sound mind resides in a sound body.” You just can’t live a positive life with a negative mind. That’s why Grade 7 students with their teacher Mrs. Rita Milan, enjoyed a presentation held by the nutritionist Lama Gharzeddine about the importance of a good healthy lifestyle.

42 Recycling Bins

As a recognition of their contribution in “Getting Climate-Ready” #UNESCO Project, students of Grade 8: Aya Gharzeiddine, Angel Zeidan, Nael Hani, and Jessica Shayya, were honored during the assembly for using the money of the prize they had won in “Pay it Forward Initiative 2016” ProtectED to buy 42 Recycling Bins.

The recycling bins were labeled: Plastic, Paper, and Organic Waste and were placed all over the school.

Bins with same labels were placed in classes, too.

Ecofriendly Christmas Tree

Grade 5 students with their science teacher, Mrs. Lara Hatoum prepared their own ecofriendly Christmas Tree  out of recyclable materials such as plastic bottles.

Reusing CDs

Grade 1 students reused old Cds to make crafts in the art class with Mrs. Zeina Alkhatib.

Building Community Partnership

In cooperation with the Municipality of Ruwaisat Al-Balout, we organized a visit with a group of student council members to the waste sorting plant. All thanks and appreciation to the Mayor of Ruwaisat Al Balout and the members who are responsible for this great development project

AMS Student Council

A nucleus for a student council of Almanar Modern School was developed where students of grades, 9, 10, and 11 took an oath to abide by the council’s laws and policy and to serve the development of the whole school. Elections were done: Tala Sarieddine _ president; Marwa Bou Rafeh _ Vice president; Celine Fayyad_ Treasurer; Dani Al Halabi _ Secretary; Nadine Serrieddine_ Chief of Public Relations Committee; Reem Makarem _ Chief of Culture Committee; Reem Abou Reslan _ Chief of Discipline Committee; Dany Chayya_ Chief of Sport Committee. More members are expected to join from grades 7 till 11 to support different committees.

An Outstanding Authentic Procedure

Many issues cannot be addressed by the school alone and require collaboration with external stakeholders. A step towards our target to recycle our waste!! We have succeeded to sort some plastics and papers from our waste. The sorted waste was sent to Rwaiset Ballout Municipality to be recycled. All the appreciation for those who are transferring their awareness to noticeable action.

United Nations Day for International Peace Celebration

With deep pleasure and great honor, values of peace, unity, open-mindedness and freedom have been the central themes of CELEBRATION at ALMANAR MODERN SCHOOL in different forms: speeches, presentations, plays, songs, dances, paintings, and planting by many different schools from different regions in Lebanon (Montana High School, High Land School, Cedar School, Btekhnay School, Dir Alharf School, Almakased School, Alnahda School, The celebration was in the patronage of Dr. Samir Aldaher – President of Lebanon Organization for the United Nations. Special guests were the sparkling musician, Jihad Akel, the creative poet, Mahdi Mansour, and AFDC (RasElmatn).

Planning for Environmental & Sustainable Activities

Teachers in kindergarten, elementary, intermediate, and secondary departments are fully involved in mapping and developing a plan for organizing environmental and sustainable activities through out the year following interdisciplinary and thematic strategies. Protect Ed – Children Safety Workshop

For two consecutive days, kindergarten and elementary teachers have been fully involved in dynamic discussions, interactive activities to learn how to implement Protect Ed program using different methods. The major themes of this safety program are: Physical Safety, Personal Safety, Healthy Living, Emotional Safety, Ant Bullying/ Ethics, and Internet Safety. We are proud to declare that Protect Ed will be integrated into Almanar Modern School curriculum in kindergarten, cycles 1, 2, and 3 in the academic year 2014-2015. Big thanks to Mrs. Rana Salloum, Kidproof company representative, and to all the teachers who showed excellent efforts and participation.
